What the form stores
Your name, email, organization, subject, message, selected desk and any source link are stored. A technical request identifier prevents duplicate submissions.
How the information is used
The editorial team uses this information to handle your enquiry, in a protected inbox. Submitting a message does not subscribe you to advertising. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering the messages we receive and in knowing which articles are read (GDPR, Article 6(1)(f)).

Audience measurement and retention
We count visits on our server as it sends each page, without cookies and without running anything on your device: from the request your browser makes anyway we keep the page, the site you came from, the country, the device type, browser and operating system. Your IP address is never written down: it is only used, with a random key that changes every day and is deleted at midnight (UTC), to compute a code that counts the same reader once per day. You cannot be followed from one day to the next. Ads shown by this publication are counted the same way on the server: when they are served, and when a click passes through our server. Only if you allow it does a script on the page also send your active reading time, how far you read and clicks on share buttons, outbound links and calls to action; in the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland we ask first, and elsewhere you can turn this measurement off at any time. Your choice is stored in this browser for 180 days, in a single entry that holds only the choice and its date, and you can change it from the privacy link at the foot of every page. Our server also notes whether you said yes or no, together with that page view, so we know how readers choose; if you say no, nothing else is sent. A Global Privacy Control signal from your browser counts as a no. None of this is sent to third parties. Counting on the server rests on our legitimate interest in knowing which articles are read (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR); measurement in the browser rests on your consent where we ask for it (Article 5(3) of the ePrivacy Directive). Each visit is kept for 30 days; after that we keep only daily totals by page, origin, country and device, with no reader code, and delete those totals after 400 days. Messages sent through the contact form are kept for one year from the day they arrive and then deleted automatically. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes requests on our behalf, including outside the EU under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
